A treasure I am thankful for

Treasure Nov 21

A place.
A safe place.
A place of welcome.
A style of life.

Traci Smith, author of Faithful Families: Creating Sacred Moments at Home has provided a gift of the November 2018 Gratitude Every Day calendar. I am using it as an opportuity to revisit photos and post them as they speak to gratitude.

We Meet Again tour – 14 October 2017

It’s been quite a fall and early winter. The big news is that I have returned to New York.  My leaving was chronicled in the Until We Meet Again Tour.

The reentry has been complicated;  it involved several trips out of the city. But things are becoming more stable and it is time to document the new We Meet Again Tour.

It starts, where else:

The Until We Meet Again Tour – an observation

High temperature and high humidity have impacted the Until We Meet Again Tour. They have combined to keep me indoors more than planned. I have made it to the gym a bit more often although even there the air conditioning struggles to keep things cool.

The competition

As I completed my work out at the Gym at the Shire and prepared to mount the elevator to return to the Shire itself, I noticed some of the others using the gym. Treadmills pounded; weight machines clanked. Grunts and sighs and snippets of conversation filled the air.

I briefly watched a younger man, much younger than me, struggle to do exercises I can do easily. And for a moment, I felt accomplished.

Then a woman, not young but not as old as me, smoothly moved into a headstand. Her ease and grace reminded me of the struggle I sometimes have just to stand on my feet. And for a moment, I despaired and thoughts of giving up filled my head.

For a moment. Only a moment.

The moment quickly passed and I realized as I exercise I do not compete with those who are ahead or with those who are behind, those who can do more or those who can do less. It is a journey of self-care. It is a competition with myself, with that voice in my head that tells me I can’t. And every time I make it through, every time I do something more, something new, I win.

And with support of family, trainer, friends, I have many wins. And more will come.

See you along the Trail.

A moment comes

A moment comes
in the journey of every hobbit,
perhaps as the hobbit goes there
or maybe on the way back again
when the journey reaches a critical moment
and the hobbit encounters a choice
of where to go
or how to proceed
or both.

Often in such moments,
something or someone
external factors,
a council,
a fellowship,
a friend,
a wizard
shows the way,
points the direction if,

if the hobbit has wisdom and grace
courage and strength
faith and hope
to listen
to hear
and to choose.

Adventures with the bandanna – Stony Point Center

The bandanna visited Stony Point Center today. After a week at the Shire, Germán Zárate went to the center to continue his visit in the United States.

Announcement: a roommate

I have a roommate.

There. I have said it publicly.

Oh, Tricia visits the Shire from time to time, not enough. Eric has been here. Friends stay with me.

But now, I am no longer alone. I have a roommate.

We have been together for a little over a month. I wanted to see how this new relationship would work out before I acknowledged it. That probably was not fair to my new roommate, but one can never be too certain about how new relationships. They change our lives. They have the potential to impact existing relationships. But it has worked well. So this seems the opportune moment to let the world, or at least the two loyal readers of my blog, know.

My roommate is the strong, silent type. It may be even more accurate to describe my roommate as the strong, silent, immobile type. One might even use the word potted and speak the truth.

While my roommate asks nothing and says less, I can count on a welcoming wave at all times of day.

With thanks to Lydia who introduced us when she stayed at the Shire, and apologies for my hesitancy in acknowledging our relationship, here’s Norman:

See you along the Trail.

15 February 2014

Physically exhausted,

emotionally drained,

the scouring continues.

After a nap.

See you along the Trail.

Scouring the Shire

photo (59)09:58:34

15 February 2014

Snow blankets the Shire, powdered sugar on pastry.

The aroma of coffee, strong coffee, fills the air.

A friend comes to visit soon,

no mark on the door needed for me to know.

Time to prepare, to make ready, to clean.

photo (58)Enthusiasm seizes me, energy surges through me,

the scouring begins.

See you along the Trail.
