Words fail and tears flow

A prayer poem in the aftermath of the killing of 8 people of whom 7 were were women and 6 were women of Asian descent
Words fail and tears flow.
They squeeze out of the corners of my eyes,
roll down to tangle in the underbrush of beard
until they break free and splatter on the keyboard.
Words fail and tears flow
for Asian and Asian American women
killed in Atlanta; lives violently taken;
your beloved children too soon gone.
Words fail and tears flow
for mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers
partners, lovers, children,
family and friend
who bear this unspeakable horror tonight
and who carry this unbearable pain into the future.
Words fail and tears flow
for communities terrorized and intimidated
by this and countless other violent acts of hate.
Words fail and tears flow
tears of grief; tears of rage.
As words fail, tears
become prayers for
those who were killed,
those who bear wounds,
those who mourn,
those who know fear,
those who would honor your image in all your precious people
and who would work for a better world.
In the name of the one whose tears flowed
at the death of a friend and for the people of Jerusalem. Amen.

With thanks to the Rev. Dr. Christine Hong for the reminder to pray for the families of the women who were killed.

A prayer for Breonna Taylor

God for us all,
we remember your beloved child
Breonna Taylor.
We will not forget her,
we cannot forget her.
Nor can we forget the
countless other Black lives
so needlessly and callously taken from us.
We give thanks for Breonna’s life and love.
We cry out that Breonna is gone too soon –
unjustly killed one year ago.
Comfort Breonna’s
family, friends, and community
in their grief.
Inspire and guide those
who continue to witness and work for
justice for Breonna.
May their efforts touch the hearts of people in power
so they repent and reconsider
and heed the call for justice.
May we all work to demand accountability,
deconstruct white supremacy,
and allow justice and equity to roll down.
In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
this prayer draws on language from Senator Reverend Ralph Warnock

Faith Leaders Sign-On Letter Opposing Federal Executions

I signed on to a letter opposing federal executions. I invite my clergy friends to join me. Here is the information:

In Collaboration with Clergy Emergency League, Red Letter Christians, Vote Common Good, L’Chaim: Jews Against the Death Penalty, and others…

As ministers to many of our greatest societal problems, we advocate for systemic solutions to violent crime that address our communities’ needs for justice, equity, and love, not vengeance. In this moment, the first step we are taking is to raise awareness among citizens and members of our congregations about the new crass and harsh ways the death penalty is being implemented. Thus, we call for an immediate halt to the executions that have been scheduled by our federal government.

It has been 131 years since the last time there was a federal execution under a lame duck president. But already, there have been post-election executions on November 19, December 10 and December 11, 2020, and now three more are scheduled for January 12, 14 and 15, 2021. The final execution is set on Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. Details of these cases raise questions of innocence/culpability, issues around serious mental illness, intellectual capacity, fairness, racial bias, and other horrific issues that plague our modern death penalty.

Between July 14 and December 11, 2020, the federal government has overseen 10 executions. The alarming speed with which these executions have been scheduled and carried out should deeply trouble all Americans.

Join me in signing the letter opposing federal executions.

#FreeThePeopleDay!

Tomorrow is the 4th annual #FreeThePeopleDay! On New Years Eve in 2017, the Community Justice Exchange started this initiative. This year the CJE, the New Sanctuary Coalition, and others, again call people to donate the cost of a drink to their local community bail or bond fund.

Freedom means freedom from cages, and it also means freedom to thrive. Support the holistic freedom of your neighbors and donate to a local mutual aid effort, community bail fund or immigration bond fund. Find a fund in your area.

Tricia and I are in. We will give to the Louisville Community Bail Fund project of BLM Louisville.

Thank you if you choose to participate.

Light a candle – New Year’s Eve

I will join my friends in the New Sanctuary Coalition in lighting a candle on New Year’s Eve. Will you join us?

In 2020, too many lights were dimmed by COVID19.

Immigrant, migrant, and refugee communities have been devastated by the impact of the virus and by the family separation the U.S. immigration system has wrought.

Thousands of our Friends are still detained, and in danger, and ICE is responsible. Thousands more live in constant fear of being torn from their families and communities at any moment.

Let us come together in community and solidarity with those in limbo at the border and in detention all over the United States. Let us keep those who have been unjustly stripped of freedom in our hearts. We will not look away from injustice and inhumanity. ‪

At 11pm on New Year’s Eve, let’s light‬ up the night sky and illuminate the the freedom we will continue to fight for. Share a picture or video of your lit candle and tag us. Use the hashtags #lightacandle #dontlookaway #FreeThemAll
