A prayer for how I err

Help me remember, God:

you are not a doctrine,

you are not a denomination,

you are not anger,

you are not hate,

you are not violation and violence,

you are love.

As I live, God, I

I know I will fall short.

I will err.

Guide me so that when I err, I do so

on the side of welcome,

on the side of inclusion,

on the side of justice and mercy,

on the side of equity,

on the side of grace

on the side of love.

I pray in the name of Jesus.

Amen.

An inadequate prayer in the face of tragedy in the Itaewon area of Seoul

God –

our minds stagger,

our hearts hurt,

our spirits sink

as we hear the news

of tragedy unimaginable

in the Itaewon area of Seoul.

Understanding falters,

words prove inadequate

and still we turn to you in prayer.

Comfort your children who grieve

for loved ones who died.

Work healing in your children

who are injured.

Support first responders,

medical personnel, and all who

provide care.

Guide the people of Itaewon,

of the Republic of Korea,

of the world,

as our spirits rage in anger,

and our minds flounder to process

to find appropriate responses.

Even in this time of profound grief,

perhaps especially in this time of profound grief,

help everyone – all your children – wherever we might be,

help us to love.

Amen.

A prayer after thirty minutes on the treadmill

On nights when

Oreos cookies and Snickers candy bars

(and whatever other sweet snacks

may be on sale)

mightily call us,

we thank you God

for your gentle, forceful Holy Spirit

who nudges us to the gym

and meets us on the treadmill.

We thank you for

family and friends

who affirm and support

our response to the Holy Spirit’s work.

May we listen ever more intently

to your Holy Spirit

who calls us to care for one another,

to care for creation,

and to care four ourselves.

May we listen

and may we respond more faithfully,

we pray in Jesus’ name.

Amen.
