Why I like New York 29: The High Line

IMG_1208 (768x1024)A diverse community calls New York home. Interesting, unique opportunities lie around almost every corner.

The High Line is one of them. Located on Manhattan’s West Side, this public park is build on a freight rail  line elevated above the streets. The High Line runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street, between 10th & 11th Avenues.

A path follows the old tracks: sometimes on them, sometimes above them, sometimes beside them. Trees, grass, and flowers (watch for some purple flower photos in a few months – I am still catching up)  line the sides. Art shows up every now and then. The vibrant life of the city surrounds the path, enhancing the experience.

Several friends had recommended the High Line. Today, with Tricia, I finally followed their advice. I should have done so sooner. I will do so again.

See you along the Trail.

Purple flowers, Fourth Avenue Presbyterian Church 1

Purple Flowers 4th Avenue Presbyterian Church Brookly 16 June 2012

Trees grow in Brooklyn.
So do purple flowers –
at least in the garden outside
Fourth Avenue Presbyterian Church.

Purple flowers, St. Stephen’s Green

St. Stephens Green, May 4, 2012

On our final day in Dublin,
for this trip,
we visited St.Stephen’s Green
where we saw ducks,
busts of Joyce and Markievicz
a Boer War arch,
a statue of Tone,
reminders of the Famine,
and purple flowers.

Purple flowers, Giant’s Causeway

Giant's Causeway. May 2, 2012

Awed by nature’s force and power
that threw up and cooled
columns of wonder,
I found time to be equally awed
by a more delicate, transient beauty.

Purple flowers,Carrick-a-Rede

Carrick-a-Rede, May 2, 2012

On the trip to Belfast,
the bus stopped at the
Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge.
The bridge remained uncrossed,
but the views were enjoyed
including this solitary flower.

Delicate purple flowers,
take root among stones:

Purple flowers, Cliffs of Moher

Cliffs of Moher, April 30, 2012

Along the cliffs they stand
in silence:
watchers,
greeters,
sentries.

Purple flowers, Dublin zoo

Dublin Zoo, April 29, 2012

After the wedding, we visited the Dublin Zoo.
It was cold.
It was cloudy.
We did not stay all day.

But we had a good time.

And there were purple flowers,
including these with their
little yellow helmets.

Purple flowers, Dublin Garden of Remembrance

Dublin Garden of Remembrance, April 28, 2012

We arrived at the
Garden of Remembrance in Dublin
almost a year
after Queen Elizabeth II,
our visit a bit less historic.

No wreath we brought,
still flowers greeted us
as we remembered
past people and events,
as we reflected on
courage and freedom,
and the costs of violence,
and the possibilities of nonviolence.

Purple Flowers, Dubhlinn Gardens 2

Dubh Linn Gardens, Dublin Castle 2

While in Dublin waiting for
Roja and Joel’s wedding,
I visited Dublin Castle with
Tricia, Bruce, Nancy.

There I discovered,
artfully disguised as
miniature purple rabbits,
the guards who stand watch
over the Dubhlinn Gardens.
