Thursday, August 14, 2014 at 7:00 PM, I will head to Union Square.

On August 14, 2014, citizens across America will gather in solidarity to hold vigils and observe a moment of silence to honor victims of police brutality. The New York event will take place on Union Square at 7:00 PM.

Posters and signs encouraged. No bullhorns. This is a peaceful vigil in memory of the victims.

Follow #NMOS14 for more information and to find a vigil near you.

See you along the Trail.

Purple flowers, Cliffs of Moher

Cliffs of Moher, April 30, 2012

Along the cliffs they stand
in silence:
watchers,
greeters,
sentries.

Unspoken

The words still hang unspoken,
yet as silent they remain,
they form anew, regrouping to
press again for enunciation.

He feels, he knows he ought to speak;
he knows, he feels, he does not dare.
Haunting, tempting, the words arise
until he forces his thoughts elsewhere.

Silent witness

Faced with horror
beyond my reckoning,
yet possible within
the imagination and execution
of others, I stand
silent.

Easy words and quick answers
do not pass my lips;
no facile explanations offered;
yet never do I turn
away.

With battered heart and tear-filled eyes,
with bruised soul and deep sighs,
I watch and listen
as I grieve and ache – I bear
witness.

Speaking’s practice

Days silently pass:
no words said.
He wonders if
speaking’s practice,
now diminished,
will some day
disappear.

Too often

Too often we hasten to speak
when we should faithfully
keep a silent watch of love.

Too often we scramble to fix
when we should tenderly
hold another’s pain in trust.
