Declaration

Independence.

Live free.
Live full.
Live well.

Independence from
old patterns,
learned habits,
undeserved guilt.

Live free.
Live full.
Live well.

Live free.
Live full.
Live well.

Independence
in the coming year,
on this very day,
at every moment.

Live free.
Live full.
Live well.

Independence
to laugh
to love
to live.

Live free.
Live full.
Live well.

Grace

Waking, sleeping dreams,
alike haunted,
we stumble forward;
no need to look back,
we bear the past within us;
only by grace
can we escape.

No eternal transaction

No eternal transaction,
struck at a crossroads,
sealed at midnight,
while the air reeks of sulphur,
but bit by bit,
choice by choice,
piece by piece,
I sell my soul
until I know longer resemble
who I want to be,
hope to be,
am intended to be.

Always never

Crawling-flying,
flying-crawling,
seconds turn to
minutes to
hours to
days to
weeks to
months to
years,
never enough,
never enough,
always never enough.

A moment comes

A moment comes
in the journey of every hobbit,
perhaps as the hobbit goes there
or maybe on the way back again
when the journey reaches a critical moment
and the hobbit encounters a choice
of where to go
or how to proceed
or both.

Often in such moments,
something or someone
circumstances,
external factors,
a council,
a fellowship,
a friend,
a wizard
shows the way,
points the direction if,

if,

if the hobbit has wisdom and grace
courage and strength
faith and hope
to listen
to hear
and to choose.

Smoke stack

Soot-stained
it stands;
once busily
belching smoke
over a bustling plant;
now a solitary, silent
witness
to the days
when sugar was king.

Change must I

Like a poorly working neon light
that flickers sporadically off, then on,
while rain beads on the window pane,
the awareness flashes across my consciousness
then fades.

Things
must
change.

Change
must
I.

Not for a moment,
not for a season,
but for now and for always.

Change
must
I.

Easter, 2015

The world looks much the same;
horror, hatred, evil still remain.
Yet somehow, somehow all has changed.
Christ is risen!
May we experience and live
the Easter message
today and all days.

Too and to

too
few
days

too
few

too
many
tasks

to
feel
good

The long goodbye

Nothing would have happened,
nothing changed,
in the marrow of my bones
I know.

Nothing would have happened,
nothing changed,
partly me,
partly you.

Nothing would have happened,
nothing changed,
too much said and done,
undone, unsaid.

Nothing would have happened,
nothing changed,
too many years,
not enough tears.

Nothing would have happened,
nothing changed,
what is, is and
will be.

Nothing would have happened,
nothing changed,
and yet,
in the morning’s wee hours
I wish I had tried
before you began the endless slide
into the long goodbye.
