Staking my claim

Clouds (1024x768)Today brought the easiest, smoothest trip I have had in a long, long time.

I travel quite a bit – not as much as some – but more than most. I write about my travel at times.

I have had some issues when I travel. I admit they pale in comparison to those faced by my friends Nancy and Sung Yeon to whom I extend condolences. But anyone who travels as often as I do will have some issues. They happen.

When they happen, I usually whine. Loudly. Widely. Boldly.

And when things go well, I admit that, too.

I figure saying nice things about good travel grants me the privilege to whine. Loudly. Widely. Boldly. No logic supports that thinking, but it works for me.

Today’s travel began in Louisville. My last meeting was a consultation between the Presbyterian Church of Korea and the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

I checked in for my flight, cleared security, and began to search for something to eat. At the restaurant, I met my friends in the Korean delegation at the airport and had another really good conversation with them. We hugged before they boarded their plane. It left first.

Then my flight departed on time. A smooth flight with amazing views. It arrived early – thirty minutes early – at LaGuardia. My bag appeared as the second bag on the carousel at baggage claim. I literally walked out the door and into a cab. The ride home was simple.

Would that travel could be like that for all of us every time. I know it will not. And now that I have given thanks for today’s trip, I have staked out my claim to whine away when things go wrong.

See you along the Trail.

I’ve never seen you like this

After a ten-day trip to Louisville, I returned to New York to view something I have never since in the two and a half years I have lived here. I noticed it as soon as the cab driver pulled into the parking lot. Amazement swept over me. I called Tricia to tell her what I saw.

Then I paused and took a photo of the Shire near the Hudson.

Shire withouth scaffolding (768x1024)

When I arrived in October 2010, scaffolding surrounded the front of the building and wove throughout the Morningside Gardens complex as tuck pointing and work on the roofs took place on the roof. The amount of scaffolding actually increased before, not so long ago, it came down around one of the other buildings.

I cannot say when it came down around my building. I left town on April 10. The scaffolding covered the building. Between that day and today, it came down. And I have seen something I have not seen before.

Lots of scaffolding remains throughout Morningside Gardens. But the work may actually end.

See you along the Trail.

Why I like New York 29: The High Line

IMG_1208 (768x1024)A diverse community calls New York home. Interesting, unique opportunities lie around almost every corner.

The High Line is one of them. Located on Manhattan’s West Side, this public park is build on a freight rail  line elevated above the streets. The High Line runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street, between 10th & 11th Avenues.

A path follows the old tracks: sometimes on them, sometimes above them, sometimes beside them. Trees, grass, and flowers (watch for some purple flower photos in a few months – I am still catching up)  line the sides. Art shows up every now and then. The vibrant life of the city surrounds the path, enhancing the experience.

Several friends had recommended the High Line. Today, with Tricia, I finally followed their advice. I should have done so sooner. I will do so again.

See you along the Trail.

Why I like New York 28: it’s a small town

IMG_1216 (1024x768)Tricia came to New York for Easter. I took today off – well as close to off as I ever do. We spent the day wandering around the city.

We started at the High Line and then went to see the Macy’s Flower Show. We sat around in Herald Square for a while and did the same in Greeley Square. We took a quick stroll through Korea Town before we returned to the Shire.

As we came out of the train station and crossed 7th Avenue at 14th Street, we met our friend Andy James. Leaving the High Line, we ran into Jeremiah Rosario, another friend. He actually recommended the flower show.

In a city of millions, we meet two friends.

In some ways, the Big Apple is something of a small town.

See you along the Trail.

Pre-flight

To my left, a man
gently pummels himself;
a man to my right
stretches and flexes.
Pre-flight rituals
remind me of a locker room,
without the smell,
and, since I have none,
makes me wonder if I should.
