Dang, he can act

I don’t know how movie viewing works for you. For me it seems that some actresses and actors were born to play certain characters. Some individuals have provided an array of incredible performances. It is impossible to tie them to one film.

But for other individuals, a hear a person’s name and a certain character comes immediately to mind. The person may or may not have won an award for the role – or even been considered for an award for the performance. They may have compiled an impressive body of work over the years.

In other instances, I hear a character’s name and a person comes to mind. Other people may have played the character in remakes – or reboots of a series or franchise (think Batman or Star Trek). But there is one person who is forever tied to the character, at least for me.

Both ways it can happen. Characters and performers forever intertwined. For example:

  • Harold Hill – Robert Preston
  • Forest Whitaker – Idi Amin
  • Sally Fields – Norma Rae
  • Audrey Tautou – Amelie
  • Billie Holiday – Diana Ross

Alec Guinness had a superb career, but when I hear his name – George Smiley appears before me.

And when I hear George Smiley, I think of Alec Guinness.

I watched the 2011 version of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy today.

Guiness and Smiley will remain intertwined.

But, dang, Gary Oldman can act!

Do you experience this phenomenon? If so, who would you name?

See you along the Trail.

Again

Again
in the night, the fire went out.
Devoid of pity, winter
invaded the room,
assaulted my body –
my thin blanket offered little resistance.
Cold chews my knuckles,
gnaws my knees.
The weak sun forces
pale shafts of light,
but no warmth,
through the dirty window.
I faintly see my breath
as I turn my head
to gaze on gray-black ash
within the fireplace.
For a moment, I ponder:
stay put, let go, give up
Then their faces rise before me
laughing, loving faces,
gone forever yet
somehow with me always.
And for their sake,
and perhaps for my own,
I stretch my painful limbs
and force myself from the bed
to shuffle stiffly across the floor,
light the fire,
begin another day,
again.

More

We hear more keenly
the words that cut us
than ever our words that wound.

We see more clearly
the faults of others
than ever we see our own.

We feel more deeply
the hurts we suffer
than ever those we inflict.

We speak more clearly
to hurt, to torment
than ever in odes of praise.

We taste more fully
our petty triumphs
than ever another’s pain.

You Made Us In Your Image

Pastor and hymnwriter Carolyn Winfrey Gillette writes new words to old hymns. Over the years she has written several hymns for peace and justice ministries of which I have been and am a part.

You Made Us in Your Image is a hymn Carolyn wrote for Human Rights Day at the request of the Presbyterian Ministry at the United Nations.

Here’s a sample of the lyrics:

You made us to be equal; you made us to be free —
To speak the truth with courage, to change society,
To follow our own conscience, to choose the words we pray.
O God, may all your children enjoy these gifts each day.

Check out the full hymn – use it for personal devotions or in a worship service:

Purple flowers, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve 1

Tiny tendrils
reach out,
slender shoots
of purple

November 2012

Big NewsThe effort at self care continued. November proved – well maybe better, maybe not.  The effort continued to focus on walking and eating. I failed to do much in the way of recording my results on another blog. I have continued to annoy family and friends by posting on Facebook. Here’s a summary for the month and you can where there were successes and where there were challenges and where there was a change. And something strange happened. At least it seems strange to me.

GOAL ONE – EAT WELL
Ate well: 1 day
Overate: 29 days (maybe not overate badly on all of those days – just most of them; certainly all of them involved eating more than would have contributed to losing any weight)

GOAL TWO – WALK 30 MINUTES AT A TIME
Walked 30 minutes at a time: 29 days (took one day off)
Note: sometimes this involves using the treadmill, other times it involves walking outside.

GOAL THREE – WALK 11,000 STEPS A DAY
Walked 11,000 steps: 22 days
Note: this is a new goal that was initiated on November 1. When October ended, I realized that it would be possible to reach 1,000,ooo steps from October 1 to December 31. For some reason, that seems cool. To become a 1,000,000 stepper would take about 11,000 steps. Since November 1, that has been the goal.

STEPS FOR THE MONTH
351,745

STEPS 1 OCTOBER THROUGH 30 NOVEMBER
709,142

Despite all the overeating, despite single-handedly eating enough Ben and Jerry’s ice cream to increase their profit margin significantly, I actually lost 4 pounds in November.

That gives me much to ponder for December and beyond.

See you along the Trail.

Why I like New York 23: the view from my office

It is hard to beat the view of all the flags of the UN Member states – bright colors on a sunny day.

The moon over Manhattan last night did that. This photo does not do it justice, but it reminds me of the beauty.

Purple flowers, Pueblo Zoo

From Greeley, we made our way south to
Ghost Ranch.
We stopped to view the Pueblo Zoo.
Among the fauna and the flora
purple flowers greeted us.

Then the rain greeted us.
We spent some time in a shelter with
some wonderful folks and
more than enough obnoxious mosquitoes.

Democracy

Democracy is as much about what happens between elections as it is about what happens during them.
Sergio Vieira de Mello

I have finished Chasing the Flame, Samantha Power’s biography of Sergio Vieiria de Mello. Actually I finished it some time ago. Among the quotes that stay with me, is this reflection on democracy.

We – the United States – has come through an election cycle. We voted on the federal, state, and local level. We made choices on a president, senators, congress people, governors, mayors, city council people, judges and more. In some places, people made decisions on ballot issues such as marriage equality and the death penalty.

Candidates and PACS raised and spent tons – obscene tons in some ways – of money. Candidates said words profound and words disturbing. Fundraising appeals filled our email in-boxes. Robo-calls annoyed us. People went door-to-door and made phone calls and stuffed mail and entered data and planted posters and more on behalf of the candidate of their choice.

All important. All critical. All needed. And yet, only a part of democracy.

The votes are counted. Our work begins. Here are some ways that I know we can work:

We advocate for our concerns and about decisions that impact our sisters and brothers with those who have been elected.

We take part in community organizations and community organizing.

We support campaigns that address issues of concern to us and to our sisters and brothers.

We make phone calls, send emails and letters, visit.

We engage in the public policy making process when those policies are made by governments and when they are made by corporations.

We use our money through gifts and purchases to express our values. Or perhaps, we ponder what values our use of money expresses and whether we need to reshape how we give and spend.

What are some others? How do you practice democracy between elections?

See you along the Trail.
