The moment

For days beyond counting, he had
wondered,
imagined,
dreamed
of the moment.

To his delight, to his surprise,
when the moment finally arrived, it
surpassed wonder,
outstripped imagination,
exceeded dreams.

Now memory ever gently
mingles with wonder,
stirs imagination,
fills dreams,
until the next moment.

Nights silent and otherwise

On nights
when silence resounds with
a deafening roar;
and
on nights
when the thunderous cacophony
of violence and hatred,
prejudice and discrimination,
inflicts suffering and sorrow
beyond measure and imagination;
on such nights,
on all nights,
Christ comes,
inviting us anew to
pursue peace,
seek justice,
love kindness,
live into hope,
and walk with God.

Vanity

Like many who have gone before,
and many who will come after,
I seek to weave words into wit,
to elicit joy and laughter.

But when it all is done and said,
my words are mere inanity.
I send them out into the world –
an exercise in vanity.

A stormy night in Manhattan

Above the howling wind
do I hear the
cries of sisters and brothers
abused,
violated,
neglected?

Amid the pelting raindrops
do I see the
tears of sisters and brothers
brutalized,
exploited,
forgotten?

And if I hear,
and if I see,
do I
react,
repent,
respond?

And every day

With Wild Mountain Thyme in the background, I wrote for a friend:

Peace to you this day,
grace to you this day,
faith to you this day,
courage to you this day,
hope to you this day,
love to you this day,
peace to you this day
and every day.

time flies . . .

time crawls . . .

time flows . . .

time stalls . . .

Air traffic hold

The door closes, the jet-way withdraws,
the plane backs away from
the gate.

Clearing the gate, the pilot turns
the plane; it enters
the runway.

Taxiing down the runway,
the plan pulls to one side
and waits

for the word to be given.

Speaking’s practice

Days silently pass:
no words said.
He wonders if
speaking’s practice,
now diminished,
will some day
disappear.

Stillness fills the dark

Musty stillness
fills the dark
as he steps again
into the house:
alone.

Patio of the station

The sun warms his face
while he stands on the patio
of the station.
The crowd gathers
impatiently
he waits for the train.

From a distance
he hears a
mournful, hopeful whistle,
and can not help but
wonder:
to go on, to stay?

Does he have a choice?
