A reflection and a rewritten hymn verse on a day when bombs fall and missiles fly

This happened today:

Family members, friends from St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, Ghost Ranch, Rio Grande Food Project, the Presbytery of Santa Fe, and life its own self, gathered at St. Andrew to celebrate the life and faith and witness of the Rev. Carl Soderbergh today.

The streets around the church were parked full when I arrived, a few minutes late. I found a spot in the parking lot.

I stepped out of the car and, for no reason I could understand at the time,  a hymn came to my mind. “Eternal Father, Strong to Save“. Those first words need some work, but the overall theme of God’s protection is profound. One of many themes appropriate for a memorial service.

The words played in my mind as long as I could remember them. When memory failed, I hummed the tune.

Alex greeted me and observed that the sanctuary was full and the service had started. He showed me to a seat in the narthex.

The first thing I heard was the pastor, son Eric, telling the congregation that a team from the Coast Guard would present honors in recognition of Carl’s service. Neither I nor the people sitting with me, knew that Carl had served. The hymn I “heard and hummed” on my way into church seemed appropriate for this particular memorial service.

The closing hymn? “Eternal Father, Strong to Save. Straining to see the screen where the words were projected, I mumbled and hummed along.

On my way home, the hymn remained an earworm. I quickly went to the computer and pulled up the lyrics

And I rewrote the hymn’s fourth verse into a prayer for Iran, Israel, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Saudia Arabia, Iraq, the United States, and any other countries affected by the madness of this armed conflict – which may be most of the countries of the world.

O Trinity of love and pow’r,
All people shield in danger’s hour;
From bomb and missile, death and woe,
Protect all where-soe’er they go;
O hear us when we cry to Thee
For those in peril on land, in air, on sea.

Amen.

A prayer poem for Trinity Sunday

I remember, God.
I remember sitting in church
on Neville Island—
hard wooden pews,
my parents, brother, sister all together.
I remember singing:
“Holy, holy, holy!
Merciful and mighty!
God in three persons,
Blessed Trinity!”

And I did not understand.

I remember, God.
I remember sitting in many churches,
sometimes in pews,
sometimes in chairs behind the pulpit.
I remember singing.
“Holy, holy, holy!
Merciful and mighty!
God in three persons,
Blessed Trinity!”

And understanding flickered dimly.

I remember, God.
I remember choosing hymns
for congregations of fewer than ten people
for congregations of hundreds.
I remember asking people to sing.
“Holy, holy, holy!
Merciful and mighty!
God in three persons,
Blessed Trinity!”

And through the years,
with repeated singing,
I give thanks, Triune God,
that some understanding began to grow.
You are One.
You are Three.
You are Three.
You are One.
You exist in eternal relationship,
forever bound together in love.

And the human creature,
created in your image,
is created for relationships—
created to love …
to love you,
to love one another,
to love creation,
to love ourself.

Lead me, God,
to understand more fully this mystery.
And more importantly, God,
lead me to live this mystery:
living love each day
as you, Creator, Christ, and Holy Spiri
live love.
“Holy, holy, holy!
Merciful and mighty!
God in three persons,
Blessed Trinity!”

Amen.

God’s Tears II

A couple of days ago, a conversation led me to reflect on rain as the tears of God. A friend said that his mother had told him the rain is God’s tears.

I took the approach of God weeping over the pain we inflict on each other – the ways we hurt one another – the damage we do. The ways we treat each other certainly grieves God sorely. Indeed, it seems that God could weep eternally over ways we violate God’s children. Sorrow, pain, grief, rage, all produce tears.

In response to my reflection, my friend Grace posed a simple question: “Are there ever tears of joy?”

I suspect that the events I was dealing with last week narrowed my vision and limited my thinking. Many things touch our hearts, minds, spirits, souls. The beauty of the world may make us weep. The wonder of love may cause us to cry. Amazing grace, incredible courage, profound sacrifice, all may elicit tears.

Tears of joy? Absolutely. Every day. Thanks be to God.

See you along the Trail.

God’s Tears

Something different happened when I left the office tonight. Well at least different from the previous two nights.

It was not raining. I simply note that. I am not complaining about the rain.

Places are desperate for rain. Children of God are dying, in part because of drought.

The simple reality is that for last two nights I and many other New Yorkers have made our ways home in the rain; others have endured the rain because they had to work or because they had no place to take shelter.

Tonight, it was overcast and damp when I stepped outside. But not precipitating.

This led to an interesting conversation:

When I was a child, I used to believe that the rain was God crying. That’s what my mother said. And I believed her.

Maybe, I said. We certainly give God enough reasons to cry. Look at how we treat each other, what we do to each other.

We do. We do.

We bid each other good-bye and I headed on toward the train.

And then the obvious flaw in that idea occurred to me:

If raindrops are God’s tears, it would never stop raining.

See you along the Trail.

And in the end

And in the end
God gives a song.
When death has come,
and pain aches deep,
it’s all we have,
it is enough.
For in the end,
God gives a song.

And in the end,
God gives us hope.
When all seems lost,
despair runs high,
it’s all we have,
it is enough,
For in the end,
God gives us hope.

And in the end,
God gives us love,
when hate reigns strong,
when fear looms large,
it’s all we have,
it is enough.
For in the end,
God gives us love.

And in the end,
God gives justice.
When systems wound,
exclude, exploit,
it’s all we have,
it is enough.
For in the end,
God gives justice.

And in the end,
God gives us peace,
when wars rage hot,
violence strikes,
it’s all we have,
it is enough.
For in the end,
God gives us peace.

And in the end,
God gives us Christ,
when all is done,
and all is said,
Christ’s all we have,
Christ is enough.
Give thanks to God,
God gives us Christ.

Did Micah know?

Micah, did you know –

in order to
love kindness,
do justice,
walk humbly with God,

we have to
face evil unspeakable,
confront horror unfathomable,
carry pain unbearable?
