On September 12, 1847, the U.S. Army executed 30 captured members of the San Patricio Battalion for desertion during the Mexican-American War, and September 12 is now commemorated annually in Mexico to honor their sacrifice and memory. The San Patricios, a group of foreign defectors, including many Irish immigrants and other Roman Catholics, are regarded as heroes in Mexico for their loyalty to the Mexican cause.
