Why I like New York 19: Halloween

Confession #1. I do not like Halloween. I did as a child – especially the candy part. I took great joy in the delight that Sean and Eric experienced in their costumes through the years. But as a holiday for me to celebrate as an adult, it does not work.

Confession #2. On my long walk home today, I noticed all sorts of people of all ages wearing all sorts of costumes going trick-or-treating along Amsterdam Avenue. As my friend J.C. Austin points out, it can sometimes prove difficult to distinguish between people wearing costumes and colorful New Yorkers. But clearly some of the people wore costumes. It proved great fun to watch parents and children and merchants take part. At W. 86th Street and Amsterdam West-Park Presbyterian Church, I came across my friend Bob Brasher – pastor of the church – handing out treats to all sorts of costumed children. Perhaps the city’s vulnerability after Hurricane Sandy played a part, but it hooked me.

Confession #3. I took the photo on the hall of my apartment building, not on Amsterdam. Clearly someone here appreciates the day more than I.

See you along the Trail.

Why I like New York 18: the wonder of Central Park

Central Park has hooked me. Wonders fill the park. Each visit brings new sights. New experiences.

Even when one becomes lost, delight often lies just around the next corner.

See you along the Trail.

Why I like New York 17: two turtles

Across the city, images evoke Tolkien. Two towers abound. Today’s trip to Central Park brought a different image. Look closely. They are there.

Purple flowers, Greeley Centennial Village Museum 2

Some day I need to learn the names of all these flowers.
Some day.

The gardens at the
Greeley Centennial Village Museum
are extensive
and at least to my eye, untrained in the ways of flora,
impressive.

Rockefeller Chapel – 16 October

It called to me. The chapel called to me. Again my evening walk in Hyde Park, Chicago led me to Rockefeller Chapel. My camera remained behind but the BlackBerry was along. I wandered to a different side of the chapel than last night and came up with another interesting view.

See you along the Trail.

Rockefeller Chapel – 15 October

In Hyde Park, Chicago for McCormick Days where Tricia received the Distinguished Alumna award, I went walking. On October 15, I wandered past Rockefeller Chapel and had to stop for a photo even though my BlackBerry was all I had. It proved a pretty interesting view.

See you along the Trail.

How does this work?

Seen in Hyde Park, Chicago on 15 October 2012. Two thoughts scream for expression:

There’s no free lunch, but there is free rent!

If it’s free, is it really rent?

See you along the Trail.

Purple flowers, Greeley Centennial Village Museum

The 2011 Colorado trek had elements of
sadness mixed with joy.
Our friend Steve died before we arrived,
but we gave thanks with his family and friends
as we witnessed to the Resurrection
and celebrated his life.

Steve lived in Greeley:
some among his friends called him
the Bishop of Greeley.

There in his domain,
we found the
Greeley Centennial Village Museum
and many gardens
and many purple flowers.

These are the first.
Others will follow in weeks to come.

The International Ecumenical Peace Convocation
met on the
Mona Campus
of the
University of the West Indies.

Memories of those days remain:
learning, leading, warm sun
worship, singing, prayers,
speakers, workshops,
networks built and renewed,
Colombia Accompaniment Program,
new options for pursuing peace,
Red Stripe under the moon,
jerk chicken, sweet and sour tofu,
little hot dogs in sauce, jerk chicken,
Sarah, Marta, Shaya, Theresa
and in the gardens,
purple flowers.
