The Until We Meet Again Tour – 22 July 2016 – birthday edition

The  Until We Meet Again Tour took an interesting turn on this birthday.

The plan had been to go to the office to do some more cleaning and packing for the move.

Yesterday afternoon, however, my colleagues in the organization Ecumenical Women found themselves without a facilitator for a retreat. Would I help them out, they asked. Of course I said yes. I thought I might go to Riverside Park for a bit after the retreat ended.

The retreat was held at 475 Riverside Drive, right around the corner from the Shire. It ended at 1:00 but conversation lasted until 4:30.

Walking back to the Shire, I realized how oppressive the heat was today, and may be the rest of the weekend.

I went to the gym around 6:00 as planned. After the workout, I decided I did not want to do the heat. I ordered dinner.

And then began watching The Lord of the Rings films. That’s usually a Christmas activity with Tricia and Eric, Sean passes, but we did not find time for it last Christmas.

With the city under a heat advisory most of the day tomorrow, this seemed like a moment when I might have time to watch all three. The Balrog just grabbed Gandalf. We’ll see where things end up.

And there was cake today as my colleagues celebrated my birthday, singing twice.

The Until We Meet Again Tour – 20 July 2016

The Until We Meet Again Tour took a couple of days off. Saturday and Sunday involved cleaning at the Shire and sleeping in. Monday and Tuesday brought a couple of work presentations.

The Tour kicked into high gear again tonight. I spotted information about an Eileen Ivers concert at the Sheen Center, purchased a ticket, and had a great evening.

The Until We Meet Again Tour – 15 July 2016

The Until We Meet Again Tour began in the offices of the Presbyterian Ministry at the United Nations with an afternoon of recycling programmatic files. Then I hopped the 7 train and rode one stop to transfer to the D. The ride ended at Coney Island, which as my son Sean points out is not an island.

I walked to MCU Park to join friends from First Chinese Presbyterian Church of New York City for a Brooklyn Cyclones game. The group included Peng Leong, Vicki Louie-Shek, Jimmy Shek, Tony Chan, Will Tsang, Doreen Cheung, Brandon Louie, Jason Chan, Michael Sellers,Suzanne Yong-Sellers, Stephanie Travitsky, and Doug Bolan. Jim and Holly Nedelka from Jan Hus Presbyterian Church were also at the game.

I failed to get any photos of my friends, but several of them did and posted their photos on Facebook. If this works, here’s a gallery from Doreen.

I did get a photo of a couple of Brooklyn Dodgers who could play the game and who helped change our country.

The Until We Meet Again Tour – 12 July 2016, part two

During the Until We Meet Again Tour‘s visit to the United Nations with Grace Ji-Sun Kim and Elisabeth Lee, I had the opportunity to see my favorite exhibit.

An escopeterrainvented by Colombian peace activist César López, stands a sign of hope and peace.

They shall beat their AK-47s into guitars.

The Until We Meet Again Tour – 12 July 2016

The Until We Meet Again Tour took an unexpected, and delightful turn today. Before they came to New York, Grace Ji-Sun Kim and Elisabeth Lee had looked into the possibility of a tour of the United Nations. None were available.

On the spur of the moment, we checked after lunch and discovered a new tour had been added and tickets were available. We went.

UN tours have been a staple of the seminars I have organized for the Presbyterian Ministry at the United Nations since October 2010. Almost every seminar takes a tour. I have gone on more than I can remember.

Today’s tour may well be the last for some time to come.

The Until We Meet Again Tour – 1 July 2016

The Until We Meet Again Tour took a hiatus for the 222nd General Assembly (2016) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

Tricia joined me for the Fourth of July weekend and the tour resumed.

Madison Square Garden, the Museum of New York, and El Museo del Barrio marked today’s visits.

The Until We Meet Again Tour – 10 July 2016

The Until We Meet Again Tour took a short, about .4 of a mile, walk today to Church of the Master. As noted earlier, my intention had been not to accept invitations to preach during the tour. However, invitations began to arrive from congregations that mean a great deal to me and it became impossible to say no. Once again I am delighted I agreed to preach. It was a tender, precious moment filled with sorrow and joy. The experience crystallized a reality that has been emerging for me – I will miss the people of New York even more than I will miss the places of New York.
