A prayer for Ozzy

God who loves us each,
on this night when snow is forecast for Louisville,
I pray for your beloved child Ozzy.
I am sure you know him, but just in case …
he has his name tattooed on the fingers of his left hand
and he is wearing the Steelers hat that Eric knit for me.
I pray for Ozzy.
May he have a warm and safe place
to spend this night.
May he make the connections he needs
for warmth and safety on the days ahead.
I pray for all the Ozzys –
each of your precious children
wherever they may be.
May they find safe, warm places
to stay this night and
to call home every night.
I pray for myself.
May I act in ways beyond
conversation, fist bumps, and giving a hat
to ensure safe homes for Ozzy and all your children.
In the name of Jesus, who had no place to lay his head.
Amen.

– based on a conversation today with John, “Call me Ozzy,” he said several times as he showed me his tattooed hand

Purple flowers, Second Street, Louisville

Purple Flowers Louisville November 9

Delicate purple petals
graced the way to
Christ Church Cathedral this morning,
for a wonderful worship experience
with friends expected and unexpected,
although the plan to go to an early service
so the Steelers game could be viewed,
which turned out to be something of a disaster
given how poorly they played.

Christmas vacation 2011, the early days

Harry Potter 2011 Blu Ray Years 1-8 Box Set Cover

I arrived in Cleveland on December 15, bringing with me a major cold. Recovery has happened.

Eric’s graduation remains the highlight of the first week. The Steelers loss to the 49ers has been the low point, although sharing the misery with Laura and Abraham helped.

Lots of work has taken place. With Eric’s help, I have begun to walk again – walk for self-care. I have a goal of 10,000 steps. The last couple days, I have met that goal. Richmond Town Square has been amazingly empty both in terms of stores and in terms of people shopping.

We visited Phoenix Coffee and took some to Noble Road Presbyterian Church to drink with Carol.

We have started a Harry Potter marathon (not on Blu-Ray, despite the image). Each of the last three evenings, we have viewed one of the movies. The next one may not happen until early next week. Sean arrives home tonight, then Christmas Eve and Christmas Day follow.

While viewing, we have engaged in a Scrabble competition. We do not keep records, but each of us has won some and lost some.

All in all, a pretty good start.

See you along the Trail.

Thank you, Aaron Smith

The news that the Pittsburgh Steelers have placed Aaron Smith on the injured reserve list brings a twinge of sorrow. He played a key, unsung role on the defense for many years, never achieving superstar status, but never receiving the recognition that he deserves. He helped make the Steelers defense one of the dominant defenses during his thirteen years on the team. They never equaled the status of the Steel Curtain, although they exceeded that defense in some statistical categories. But the game has changed in over the last forty years.

This marks the third consecutive year that Smith has landed on injured reserve, unable to play a full season. At his age, one has to wonder, will he come back again? Even before his current injuries resulted in an end to his year, conversation indicated this could be his final year.

Should he come back again – should this be the end – either way – thank you Aaron Smith for the professionalism and poise which you brought to your role in the Black and Gold for so long.

See you along the Trail.
