We Meet Again Tour – 29 December 2017, #1

After the traveling between New York, Louisville, Ann Arbor, Solon, Ann Arbor, and Detroit, Tricia and I returned to New York.

It was cold. Cold. We hung out at the Shire and watched tv and movies and ordered food in.

Except for 29 December. We bundled up and braved the cold to see a play. And we allowed some time to check out some of the city lights. Saks Fifth Avenue put on a pretty fair show.

I saw joy

I was feeling grumpy.

OK, I was feeling grumpy-er. Always play to one’s strengths.

IMG-6692I was walking down Fifth Avenue, heading to Rockefeller Center.

Visitors to New York filled the sidewalk. They stopped in the middle and made quick turns. They abruptly countermarched, heading back uptown without warning.

My blood pressure rose. My ire increased. And then I saw her.

She sat in a wheel chair, looking at the lights and the sights.

I do not know her name and never learned her story. It was inappropriate to ask. But I wondered.

Was this her first time in New York – the culmination of a long-time dream?

Was she a long-time city resident?

Was this an annual visit?

In the end, the reason mattered not. All that mattered was her face.

She glowed. Amazement. Wonder. Delight. Many words could describe her face and bearing. But the one that works best for me, is joy. Simple joy. Pure joy. Unabashed joy. I have not seen such joy often, but I have seen it enough that I recognize it when I do.

I saw joy that day and I carried it in my heart to Rockefeller Center. I hope it showed, just a little, on my face.

See you along the trail.

P.S. – the photo was taken inside the Time Warner Center on the same day. I did not get any photos at Rockefeller Center. I will be back.

The Until We Meet Again Tour – 26 July 2016

The Until We Meet Again Tour wandered around Rockefeller Center and 5th Avenue this evening. St.Patrick’s Cathedral was visited.

Thanks to Hazel Man for sharing this part of the tour.

It was hot.

And humid.

See you along the Trail.

Purple flowers on an egg

IMG_4398 (800x533)

Faberge presented the Big Egg Hunt as a fundraiser for Asia’s endangered elephants through Elephant Family and children in New York City through Studio in a School. Eggs were scattered across the city with QR codes to identify them. The idea being you were to find the eggs photograph them and tag them with the code. The eggs are now on display at Rockefeller Plaza. Makes them easier to find. Thanks to Tricia, Eric, Neal, and Jane who called this one to my attention.

I, too, am a tourist

Last night the group from Missouri Union Presbytery that is taking part in a seminar at the Presbyterian Ministry at the United Nations invited me to attend the Rockettes‘ performance at Radio City Music Hall.

Since I knew I would not make it to the gym, I walked there in order to make sure I got in my steps (I did!). The route took me past Rockefeller Center where the bright lights got me.

See you along the Trail.
